Pakistan Railways Transfers 11 Passenger Trains to Private Sector
In a new effort to boost travel experience and revenue, Pakistan Railways has a contract for 11 more passenger trains to be outsourced to the private sector for commercial management.
Railway officials said the intention is to better service for passengers at no cost and to provide financial relief to the department. The private companies will be responsible to manage selling tickets, in managing the on-board services and spending on the communication, while the government will keep management and control of the tracks and operations.
Trains to be Outsourced
The following trains are included in this new outsourcing phase:
- Hazara Express
- Bahauddin Zakaria Express
- Millat Express
- Subak Kharam Express
- Rawal Express
- Badar Express
- Ghori Express
- Ravi Express
- Thall Express
- Faiz Ahmed Faiz Express
- Mohenjo-Daro Passenger
Not Complete Privatisation
Railway authorities emphasised that this is not complete privatisation. They are outsourcing the commercial operation of the train, but the government maintains control and regulation of the safety and the infrastructure of the railway. This is not the first time Pakistan Railways has outsourced, in February 2020 it moved to outsource seven passenger trains for the commercial management and some of them are in the list again which may be as part of agreement clarity or a rebidding situation.
Why The Change?
Pakistan Railways, in particular, has faced issues with insurmountable bills related to established arrangements for proposed modernizations in passenger services. Outsourcing is part of a funky plan to streamline the existing travel services for an improved the passenger department and relieve the operational burden placed on the department. Consequently, with this agreement with the private sector, tourists should see cleaner coaches, superior onboard travel services, and an improved arrival and departure schedule.
So far, the outsourced model has demonstrated some evidence of improving service on trains that were outsourced historically, so frankly, Railway should expect to be just as successful with the 11 trains.
