Imran Khan Jailed in £190m Al-Qadir Trust Corruption Case

Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were jailed on Friday in the £190 million Al-Qadir Trust land corruption trial. Imran Khan, was given 14 years’ rigorous imprisonment, while Bushra Bibi was given a seven-year imprisonment and 500,000 Pakistani rupees as a fine. The district election commissioner has set aside a one million rupees fine for Khan. This is the fourth time the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI chief has been convicted.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) charged the couple with embezzling £190 million (50 billion rupees). The funds repatriated from the UK during his differed term, were also reportedly used for his benefit, in setting up of Al-Qadir University at Jhelum. According to the report, another beneficiary of the Al-Qadir Trust is Bushra Bibi, wife of Imran Khan, who has gotten a chance to possess 458 kanals of land.

While other accused parties, like a benchmark property tycoon, are outside Pakistan now, Khan and Bibi are the only ones charged. NAB said they operated with ‘mala fide intention,’ and also otherwise could not explain the transactions. Khan, currently detained, dismissed the allegations referring to them as politically influenced.
