Lahore ‘rape’ case: 20 people charged with spreading false information on social media

The case was registered on the complaint of the principal of the private college, Saadia Javed, who said that the accused had conducted a malicious campaign on social media, damaging the reputation of the college.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), an investigation found no evidence of rape or the existence of the alleged victim. 

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday categorically rejected rumours of the alleged rape of a Lahore student on campus, calling them a ‘fabricated story’ designed to mislead students into action through social media.

At a press conference in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz said that the incident never took place and that the rumours were intentionally spread to damage the reputation of the government.

Last week, news of the alleged rape went viral on social media, prompting police to arrest a security guard at the college. 

She also accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of fuelling the rumours to gain political advantage.

Earlier, Punjab Minister Maryam Nawaz had also formed a high-level committee to investigate the alleged ‘rape’ of a student at a private college.

Father of girl denies rape incident 

The father of a young girl who was allegedly assaulted by a security guard at a private college has denied any such incident, saying the protests on his daughter’s behalf were unfounded.

Expressing disbelief after viewing footage of the protests involving her daughter. ‘Those who have daughters can feel this pain,’ he added.
