Government Increases Sugar Prices Due to Shortages

In a recent Development the Government-owned Utility Stores Corporation (USC) has decided to Raise the Price of Sugar by Rs8 Per kilogram. This Price Hike comes as the USC is Facing a Shortage of Sugar in its Stock. The increase will have an immediate Effect affecting the Price of Sugar for Consumers across Pakistan.

To Give you Some Context earlier this Month the USC was Struggling to Maintain an adequate Supply of Sugar. They are Currently working on buying 40,000 tons of Sugar to fill this Shortage. But until that Supply arrived they had to make a change in the Prices of Sugar.

So, here’s how it affects people, The price of sugar has now gone up to Rs155 per Kilogram for the General Public. Before this increase it was being Sold for Rs101 per Kilogram in the utility stores. However, for those who are Part of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), the price remains lower at Rs109 Per Kilogram.

This adjustment in Sugar Prices is a Big deal because Sugar is a Common ingredient in Pakistani Cooking, and the Price increase might lead to Higher Costs for Food and Household Expenses.

To tackle this Problem, the Government is also Cracking down on those who hoard Essential goods to sell them at higher Prices. They have already Seized a Significant amount of hoarded Sugar totaling 6,994 metric tons across the Country with a notable amount coming from Punjab which is Pakistan’s largest Province.
