ji calls for a complete shutdown of karachi over fuel prices
The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has called for a protest on September 19 and a complete standstill of Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, against the recent hike in fuel prices as well as increasing inflation in the country.
Speaking at a press conference at its headquarters in Karachi, the city head of the party, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, called on the residents of the city to come out and support JI for its demands. He called for people to come out and block all major roads of the city. He said that the protest was an ultimatum to the government to take back the recent hike in fuel prices.
He said the party was struggling for accountability of the rulers and the unjust pressure put on the masses because of their excesses.
Sharing the plan of the protest, he said that cars would go to 15 major points in Karachi on Tuesday evening and turn off their vehicles stopping the traffic flow. He also called the caretaker government a continuation of the previous coalition government of PDM.
He said that this was the third time in a month during the short tenure of the caretaker government that fuel prices were increased. He called the increase in fuel and electricity prices illogical as the Pakistani rupee was appreciating against the US dollar.
He said that masses were at their limits because of the increasing cost of living in the country. The ruling elite of the country would escape at the first sign of trouble, he said, adding that people of the country must come forward to get their rights.
