On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping began a four-day state visit to Russia, where he became the guest of honor at Russia’s Victory Day military parade with President Putin. It underlines the further development of friendly relations between the two countries in a period of changing geopolitical realities.

In his arrival statement, Xi pointed out that China and Russia are friendly neighbors and reliable partners who will jointly safeguard the outcomes of the World Anti-Fascist War and oppose ‘hegemonism and power politics.

The visit is quite timely as the two countries’ relations with America are rather challenging due to the policies of the current US President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ policy. For China, relying on Russia is beneficial given the current trade wars between America and China. For Russia, the partnership helps sustain it as it continues the war in Ukraine.

Other recognised leaders who were present during the May 9 parade include: Some of the heads of state of these countries include; Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Vietnam President To Lam of Vietnam and Belarus leader Aleksandr Lukashenko.
