The already delicate relation between Pakistan and Afghanistan seems to be getting to a new low as pressure rises at the border. Before it can be described with more complications, now it has become an unstable conflict with dangerous air attacks and crashes in Syria. This violence surge was found several months after a spike in the insurgent attacks along with the political instability within the region under concern.
Deadly Airstrikes in Afghanistan
In late December 2024, Pakistani military airstrikes Eliminated at least 46 people including civilians in eastern Afghanistan according to Afghan Government sources. The strikes, according to reports, were planned against militants from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a group that has been fighting against the Pakistani state from Afghan soil. Pakistan has for many years accused Afghanistan’s Taliban government of hosting these militants, which has often strained relations between the two neighbours.
While the Pakistani government argues that these airstrikes were necessary military operations to eliminate these militant groups, the Afghan authorities are now aghast at the high levels of civilian toll. From reports, it is clear that women and children were among the dead in the strikes hence compounding the humanitarian situation in the area.
A Deteriorating Relationship
The latest military clash is the largest direct conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan since the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in August 2021. During that period the head of Pakistan’s intelligence agency was one of the first foreign visitors to the newly established regime, which means there are prospects for collaboration. However, less than three and half years later, the relationship is worse than that and this is clear from the recent strikes and the worsening of relations between the two countries.
They have been compounded by differences on the issue of border control with Pakistan accusing Afghanistan of not doing enough to rein insurgent activities near Pakistan’s tribal frontiers. Pakistan has been in the hot of the horn in this regard which has escalated diplomatic tensions after Afghanistan reported that it was violated through the use of these airstrikes.
The Way Forward
Thus, the situation remains tense and now the two countries are to come up with a sustainable solution to the problem of borders. Thus, due to the auspices of the international actors, the appeal to resume the dialogue besides being presented with some challenges in the future for the attainment of peace.
