Sialkot PSL Fans are reacting strongly to the recent Pakistan Super League (PSL) team identity changes, mainly because the newly introduced franchise connected to their city lost its identity just weeks after being announced. The issue mixes regional pride, franchise ownership politics, and cricket history.
Here is what is happening.
Sialkot PSL Fans React as Team Was Renamed Before Its First Season
Originally, PSL 2026 introduced a new franchise called “Sialkot Stallionz.” The name was chosen to celebrate the famous domestic T20 team Sialkot Stallions, which had a historic winning record in Pakistan cricket.
However, after a major ownership takeover, the franchise was rebranded to “Multan Sultans.”
This happened when CD Ventures acquired the majority stake in the team and requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to restore the Multan identity in the league.
For many Sialkot fans, the change felt like their city lost its PSL representation almost immediately.
Strong Cricket History in Sialkot
Sialkot has one of the richest cricket traditions in Pakistan, which makes the identity issue emotional.
The original Sialkot Stallions domestic team:
- Won five consecutive National T20 Cups (2005–2010)
- Set a world record of 25 consecutive T20 wins
- Represented Pakistan in the Champions League T20 in 2012
Because of this legacy, many fans believed the PSL team would finally bring top-tier cricket back to their city.
Regional Pride and Representation
PSL teams are strongly tied to cities such as:
- Lahore
- Karachi
- Peshawar
- Quetta
- Multan
When the Sialkot franchise appeared, locals felt it was recognition of their cricket culture and economy.
So when the name changed to Multan Sultans, many supporters felt their regional identity was removed from the league.
Ownership Decisions vs Fan Expectations
The rebranding was mostly a business decision.
The new owner, Gohar Shah, said it was important for him that Multan remained represented in PSL, which is why the team name was restored.
From a branding perspective:
- Multan Sultans already had a strong brand value in PSL
- The team had previously won the PSL 2021 title and built a large fan base.
However, this decision clashed with expectations in Sialkot.
Fear of Losing PSL Matches in Sialkot
Another concern among fans is that if the team identity shifts away from Sialkot:
- The city may not host PSL matches
- Local cricket talent may get less visibility
- Economic benefits linked to PSL games may move to other cities
This has intensified frustration among supporters.
Final Words
Sialkot fans are upset because a PSL franchise initially representing their city (Sialkot Stallionz) was quickly renamed Multan Sultans after a new ownership takeover. Many feel their city’s cricket identity and representation in the league was taken away.
