In a Significant Development in Pakistan’s Political landscape Shehbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has been Elected as the Country’s 24th Prime Minister. During the National Assembly Session Chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Shehbaz Sharif Secured 201 Votes Defeating his Opponent Omar Ayub Khan from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) who Garnered 92 Votes.
The Session Commenced with the oath-taking Ceremony of PML-N’s Jam Kamal. However it was not without Disruptions, as SIC Lawmakers Protested by Chanting Slogans and Displaying Pictures of the PTI Founder.
Shehbaz Sharif’s Candidacy received Support from Various Political Parties including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP). The Swearing-in Ceremony is Scheduled for March 4 at 3 pm in the President’s House where President Dr Arif Alvi will administer the Oath to the new Prime Minister.
The Nomination Papers for Shehbaz Sharif were Submitted by Prominent figures such as Ishaq Dar, Hanif Abbasi and Khursheed Shah. On the other hand Omar Ayub Khan’s Nomination papers were Proposed and Seconded by Several MNAs.
This Development comes after the Smooth Election of the National Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker who were Supported by the PPP and PML-N, Respectively. The Victory in the Prime Minister’s Election underscores the Collaborative efforts of Opposition Parties in the Parliament.
