Pakistan's Digital Nation Bill Delayed Over Internet Speed Concerns

The Minister of Information Technology has delayed the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill as debates over the internet speed and surveillance increase. PML-N’s Omar Ayub claimed that secret agencies are trying to shut down the internet and the practice cost millions of rupees, while PTI’s Sharmila Farooqi voiced her irritation over the slow progress in increasing internet speed.

PTA Chairman Hafeez-ur-Rehman defended the country’s internet infrastructure, using the fact that Pakistan is 97 ranked in 200 countries for mobile service. He however noted that internet shutdown is conducted in compliance with court orders, federal government, and Ministry of Interior. On the other hand, State Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja said that the internet is back, and there is $1.5 billion recent export and negotiation with Starlink.

Federal IT Minister Syed Amin Ul Haq also was against restrictions for VPNs saying that there is need for faster and more un-interrupted internet connection in order to increase exports in IT. As for internet shutdowns, the committee has planned an in-camera meeting with representatives from the Interior Ministry; in the following meeting, diverse actors will be invited to discuss VPN actions.
