Pakistan to Lead United Nations Security Council in July
Pakistan will begin its month-long term as president of the United Nations Security Council for the month of July 2025, part of its two-year term as a non-permanent member that started in January 2025, when Pakistan was elected along with 184 other countries to serve a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. There were 193 votes cast and Pakistan received 182 of them.
The president of the UNSC rotates monthly among its 15 member countries. Pakistan will be represented by its Ambassador to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad. He promised the presidency under Pakistan’s leadership would be “transparent, inclusive, and responsive to the issues that concern people around the globe.”Ambassador Iftikhar remarked, “The world is in a very complicated situation,” characterized by a host of conflicts around the globe, instability, and humanitarian crises. He said Pakistan was committed to “peace, dialogue, and cooperation at the regional level.”
Concentrate on Peaceful Diplomacy
Later this month, Pakistan will host two high-level events – one event will focus on multilateralism and peaceful dispute resolution, while the other will be on cooperation between the UN and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The UNSC will also be looking at various issues affecting the world today – ranging from developments in West Asia, Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.
Ambassador Iftikhar already briefed UN Secretary-General António Guterres about Pakistan’s plan, emphasizing Pakistan’s long history of providing peacekeeping and diplomacy.
