Pakistan, Indonesia Strengthen Economic Ties at D-8 Summit in Cairo

The Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 11th D-8 leaders’ summit held in Cairo, Egypt today and reviewed the relations between the two countries and decided to enhance bilateral cooperation in the economic and trade fields. In the meeting PM Sharif appreciated Indonesia for being one of the major trading partners with emphasis on palm oil import to Pakistan which makes up a large share of the edible oil import of the country.

The leaders also considered Pakistan’s desire to achieve the status of an associate dialogue partner of ASEAN with particular focus on the possible becoming of a sectoral dialogue partner as a result of which PM Sharif thanked Indonesia for its support in this regard. The two leaders also spoke of the Palestine conflict insisting on an immediate cease-fire in Gaza while endorsing a two-state solution. The Indonesian President agreed to PM Sharif’s invitation to visit Pakistan that was a constructive step in diplomatic diplomacy.

The meeting was held during the D-8 Summit for “Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises” in the presence of the Deputy PM & Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Der and Information Minister Ataullah Tarar. The D-8 Organization which was created in 1997 is composed of eight developing countries whose primary aim is to increase the level of economic cooperation between member states and increase the quality of life of their nations.
