The Pakistan cricket team received a 5% reduction from their match fees because they failed to meet the required over rates during their first Champions Trophy 2025 game against New Zealand. The match team received its penalty on Wednesday after failing to reach their overs quota during the match time.
The sanction came from Andy Pycroft who works at the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees when he discovered Pakistan team, guided by Mohammad Rizwan, fell short of one needed over while considering time regulations. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel mandated the enforcement of the penalty against Pakistan team for their over-rate violation.
An experienced group comprised of on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Sharfuddoula together with third umpire Joel Wilson and fourth umpire Alex Wharf made this decision. The Pakistan team captain Mohammad Rizwan formally recognized the offence so a formal hearing could be avoided.
According to ICC, regulations a player receives a 5% penalty of their match fee for every over his team bowls beyond the allotted period thus showing the governing body’s dedication to match speed and completion times.
