The artificial intelligence policy also targets better cybersecurity for Pakistan. Expected in the next months, it could help Pakistan rank among the top 10-15 countries in the Global Cybersecurity Index. According to officials, these new AI initiatives boost digital security and support Pakistan’s fast growth of the digital economy, thus making the country’s online space safer and more resilient.

Pakistan is shaping its first-ever policy for AI largely for cybersecurity purposes. Recently, Syed Junaid Imam, one of the key officials at the Ministry, publicly showcased these plans during ‘Cyber Threat Intelligence 2024’, held in Islamabad. According to Imam, AI is, in fact, well recognized within Pakistan’s cybersecurity landscape. The reasons are that AI helps in real-time threat detection and response and thus fortifies cyberspace security.

The AI frameworks that are likely to be helpful for support and enhancement of digital safety are being sought by the government. In the wake of continued research with AI-based cybersecurity tools, grand plans are being made in Pakistan to take a place at the top alongside the world’s greatest cybersecurity-focused nations. The government hopes this drive with AI will eventually provide basic toolkits to protect valuable national data and information.

Strengthening the digital infrastructure of Pakistan is a need for the surge of the country’s digital economy. This according to Imam, that for Pakistan’s overall economic growth and prosperity needs; a secure digital economy is really that important. Resources have already been invested by the government into enabling digital transformation in various sectors, which are of course topped by cybersecurity.

Further, the country has also set up its national Computer/Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) that will help in better resolution of cyber threats. In addition, Imam said that the government also puts up sector-specific CERTs in telecom, banking, and education sectors as well as other industries. Sectoral CERTs will maintain coordination towards channelling security measures nationwide.
