Chief of Fazlur Rehman JUI-F Maulana Fazlur Rehman has urged opposition parties to step up coordination as Pakistan faces political, economic and security challenges. Speaking after a meeting of the central council, the JUI-F chief said major national questions should be resolved through Parliament and wider political consultation.
This comes after weeks of talks between opposition parties, including the JUI-F and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Opposition parties have also discussed holding an All Parties Conference on law and order, the economy, inflation and proposals concerning new provinces. A PTI delegation led by Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had also previously met Fazlur Rehman to discuss a joint strategy.
Opposition Parties Urge Greater Coordination In Parliament
The united opposition proposal has evolved through meetings of several political groups rather than a single formal agreement. In August, opposition leaders held their first joint parliamentary meeting and announced plans for collective action on violence, economic difficulties and political restrictions. Senior opposition leaders, including Fazlur Rehman, were part of those talks.
The talks also included Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the opposition leader in the National Assembly, representatives from the PTI and other opposition figures. As the groups have talked about broader political activity outside the legislature, they have also talked about coordination within Parliament. The proposed All Parties Conference is intended to provide another forum in which to examine areas of common concern.
Fazlur Rehman’s Position Now Central To Political Dialogue
Fazlur Rehman has always taken Parliament as the core of his response to the country’s political difficulties. At his press conference on 22 September, he called for an in-camera parliamentary session on government policies and the security situation in the region. He also argued that major national and foreign-policy issues should be addressed in parliament.
The JUI-F chief has also declined to mediate between the government and protesting opposition parties, stating that JUI-F itself is an opposition party in the political dispute. His comments to Dawn said dialogue should be between the government and the parties conducting the protests rather than through a separate mediation arrangement.
Top Concerns Still Economic Strains And Inflation
Opposition parties have highlighted the economic issues, attributing the challenges faced by the general public in Pakistan to inflation and economic hardship. Fazlur Rehman has linked economic issues to the need for greater parliamentary scrutiny and a joint political debate rather than dealing with economic questions separately from the broader debate about the country’s governance.
The opposition has included inflation, economic management and the effect of government policies in its broader consultations. These concerns have also coincided with public debates on fuel prices and the petroleum levy, with Jamaat-i-Islami separately organising a protest march toward Islamabad over the levy.
Fears Over Security Put Pressure On Political Debate
Another key issue in the opposition’s proposed common platform has become law and order. Security conditions have been specifically included in opposition consultations with Fazlur Rehman, raising concerns over incidents in Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The JUI-F chief has held that the security situation demanded more attention from the political leadership and the Parliament.
The regional security environment has added another dimension to Pakistan’s domestic political discourse. Fazlur Rehman has sought an in-camera session of parliament on the regional situation, underlining the view that sensitive security developments necessitate institutional discussion in addition to executive decision-making.
Opposition Queries Provincial Structure
Provincial organisation has also been taken up by the emerging opposition agenda. The opposition parties have held discussions on proposals for creating new provinces, while Fazlur Rehman has opposed the division of existing provinces without wider preparation and political consensus.
Fazlur Rehman has also associated the provincial question with provincial autonomy and constitutional arrangements. His position, as reported, is that any talk of modifying the country’s provincial makeup should be conducted through the constitutional and political process and not through informal suggestions or decisions that are not broadly discussed.
Test Of Opposition Coordination In Protest Politics
The proposed united opposition is working out planned political activity in Islamabad. JUI-F has joined talks for a broader opposition platform, while PTI has called for a protest on September 27. At the same time, Jamaat-i-Islami has been holding a separate protest march mainly against the petroleum levy.
The diversity of protest programs demonstrates the potential and complexity of opposition co-ordination. Some common concerns are expressed by a number of parties about economic conditions and political governance, but their immediate demands and organisational strategies are not identical. Thus, durable cooperation would need to be based on agreement on common priorities, but at the same time it would allow individual parties to retain their separate political identities.
Parliament Is Still The Main Arena For National Issues
Fazlur Rehman’s call for a united opposition equates Parliament with political mobilisation as a major forum to address Pakistan’s challenges. Opposition parties have already started working together on economic pressure, law and order, constitutional questions and provincial arrangements, with more consultation expected in proposed multi-party meetings.
What is emerging as an opposition strategy is a developing political process, not an alliance already made. Parties with different political programs will be participating, and therefore it is for future discussions to determine the extent of co-ordination, the issues on which a common platform can be formed and the methods to which the participating parties are prepared to agree.
