Apna Khet Apna Rozgar Scheme In Punjab
Apna Khet Apna Rozgar scheme is a government scheme that provides cultivable state land to eligible families who do not have agricultural land. The aim is to help deserving households to develop sustainable sources of livelihood and to enhance agricultural production in Punjab.
The programme offers beneficiaries three to five acres of government-owned agricultural land on a long-term lease. The government then leases the land to families for a long period of time rather than handing it over.
Who Can Apply?
The scheme is mainly for landless families who need help to start their agricultural livelihoods. The applicant should not own any agricultural land and should not own more than 10 marla of residential land.
Another key requirement is permanent residence. The applicants should belong to the same revenue estate where the available government land is situated. This condition ensures that the allocation of land is first for local communities.
Only one applicant from each family can participate in the program. This rule is designed to fairly distribute available land amongst deserving households, not to concentrate benefits within a single family.
This is not available to some groups. Those who have benefited from previous government land distribution programmes are not eligible to re-apply. Federal and provincial government employees and their dependents are also excluded from the scheme.
How Much Land Can Eligible Families Get?
The land is provided under long-term lease arrangements, normally over periods of between 10 and 20 years. These long-term lease arrangements provide the security beneficiaries need to invest in cultivation, improve soil quality and build profitable farming operations, removing the uncertainty of short-term leases.
Lease charges are still heavily subsidised, making it affordable to participate for low-income households. In many cases, the symbolic annual rent may be as low as PKR 100 per acre, thus lightening the financial burden in the first years of farming.
New Farmers Assistance
The scheme not only allocates land but also provides financial assistance to beneficiaries to prepare their farms for cultivation.
Eligible families can be given a set-up funding of around PKR 50,000 per acre, and total financial assistance can be up to PKR 200,000 per family depending on the programme provisions. The funds will be used for land preparation, initial planting costs and purchase of critical farm inputs before the start of the first crop cycle.
It lowers the financial hurdles that many first-time farmers encounter, and allows the farmers to get started with more confidence.
Additional Support Available For Agriculture
The beneficiaries of the Apna Khet Apna Rozgar scheme can also take advantage of many other agriculture schemes launched by the Punjab government.
The Green Tractor Scheme offers subsidised or interest-free financing of modern tractors, to support farmers in improving efficiency and reducing manual labour.
Eligible farmers can also get Kisan Cards, which give better access to interest-free agricultural credit and subsidies on seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and other farming inputs.
There is also the additional support of modern agricultural machinery such as laser land levellers, seed drills, harvesting machinery, and other technologies to increase productivity and manage resources well.
