Pakistan accelerates railway modernisation drive under leadership push for improved infrastructure

Pakistan Railways modernisation

Pakistan Railways modernisation is also taking great steps towards modernising its transport system, with Pakistan Railways revamping on a grand scale. Shehbaz Sharif is the leader of the country who is working on improving the infrastructure, efficiency and connectivity of the country to the region.

The Main Line-1 (ML-1) project is one of the main parts of this endeavour and a part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. This Karachi-Peshawar railway track upgrade of 10billion will see the track modernised, thus allowing the trains to travel at a speed of up to 160km/h, and the safety standards will also be improved. As a large part of the tracks is obsolete, the project is essential to future developments.

Digital upgrades and improved services

Another program that is transforming Pakistan Railways into a digital one is the Railway Advanced Infrastructure Network (RAIN). This system will introduce GPS tracking and computerised signalling, centralised monitoring and help in increasing the level of punctuality and operational efficiency.

Local manufacturing is another positive step. Domestic production of modern coaches and wagons is now done in collaboration with other countries, enhancing the industry and minimising the reliance on imports. The passenger services also grow, including the development of facilities at the station and the installation of Wi-Fi.

Stronger connectivity and sustainable growth

In addition to upgrades, Pakistan is also increasing its railway network to enhance connectivity in the region. The infrastructure projects are new (such as a 105-kilometre rail connection in Tharparkar), which are designed to facilitate energy transportation and the development of industry. More importantly, it reflects the will of Pakistan to invest in infrastructure that can help in the long-term economic growth.
