Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood on Monday called an emergency meeting of all provincial education ministers where he, along with input from others, deferred the decision to close schools up until the next meeting. Mahmood said that any decision to close schools and other educational institutions will be taken after thorough deliberations from all stakeholders.
Parents and students have asked Mahmood to give a call for shutting down schools in view of the rising Covid-19 cases in the country asking the authorities to ensure no one is affected by the virus.
Prime Minister Imran Khan had said earlier on Monday that the government is constantly monitoring the situation and the decision to close schools or allowing them to continue their activities will be taken after one month.
The government has asked all schools and education operators to observe strict standard operating procedures at schools in order to decrease the number of positive Covid-19 cases.
The cases have risen significantly over the last two weeks as the second wave of Coronavirus has gripped the country. The government has also imposed smart lockdown across various high-risk cities in the country.
