Addition of Mother’s Name on Pakistani Passports
The Pakistani government has introduced a new policy requiring the addition of the mother’s name for all newly issued and renewed passports. This policy intends to allow for the standardization of travel documents in Pakistan with those of international travel documents formats and social obligations, while also addressing specific practical challenges such as those that face single mothers when they are left without their fathers’ identifying information on official documentation.
At present, official Pakistani passports and national identity cards contain only the father’s information. While the child’s mother may be alive, divorce, separation, death, or geographical barriers are just a few scenarios that seem to create considerable challenges when the father is absent.
Throughout the world, there have been examples of countries followed through on the commitment to include both parents in documentation, particularly with regard to travel and legal proceedings, when that documentation becomes associated with a passport. Pakistan seems to be following a similar pattern to what’s defined through a policy where it would emanate in this form. Passports that are already issued will be unaffected and fully acknowledged until until their expiration date. Moving forward, only new passports will be affected here.
