Pakistan’s First Gold Medallist in Wrestling, Din Mohammad, Died
Pakistan has sadly lost an iconic sportsman. Deen Mohammad, the country’s first-ever international gold medalist in wrestling, passed away after a lengthy illness. He was more than 100 years old and was from Bata Pur, Lahore.
One of the proudest moments in Pakistan’s history
He achieved a major milestone in 1954 by winning the first gold medal for Pakistan at the 1954 Asian Games in Manila. His success in wrestling over top wrestlers from the Philippines, India, and Japan helped achieve a proud moment for the country, and wrestlers were now on the world map.
Beyond just one gold medal
Deen Mohammad won a gold medal at the Asian Games, and also won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games. Deen Mohammad represented Pakistan in several international competitions, always with his country’s pride upon his shoulders. He was one of the true national heroes of Pakistan, as he dedicated himseld and gave his all for his sport.
Outpouring of Tributes
Punjab Sports Board confirmed his death and expressed his immense contribution to Pakistan’s sporting history. The Punjab Sports Minister Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar stated, “Deen Mohammad, will always be remembered as a wrestling legend, he took Pakistan’s flag high”.
Director-General of Sports Khizar Afzal Chaudhry prayed for his soul and stated he would be “an inspiration for the future generation”.

Deen Mohammad was much more than a wrestler; he represented national pride and resilience. His journey will be a source of inspiration for young athletes across the nation. May he be remembered with pride by the people of Pakistan and in the wrestling rings of the future.
