The KMC has decided to take strict action by fining people who litter the roads
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has taken note of the deteriorating cleanliness situation in the city, in response to an increase in complaints from the public. He has instructed the Department of Application and Implementation to take immediate action to resolve the problem.
Acting on the mayor’s orders, the deputy director of the enforcement and implementation department, Khaleeq ur Rehman, issued a formal order instructing city inspectors to take action against those contributing to the litter problem in the city. Initially, an investigation was launched in Karachi’s commercial and industrial areas.
The authorities, sources revealed, will investigate areas where sanitation is inadequate in order to identify the reasons for insalubrity, focusing on those responsible for negligence or carelessness in maintaining cleanliness.
To help streamline operations, the deputy director responsible for application and implementation, Kazim Mustafa, has been appointed as the point of contact. Dr Mustafa will act as liaison between the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and officials in the Enforcement Department.
The law enforcement department has already begun its work in the previously neglected southern district, and surveys are being carried out in busy shopping areas, restaurants and markets.
Authorities are also checking that rubbish is removed from bins and refuse containers in these areas on time. Steps are being taken to encourage residents, shopkeepers and market syndicates to dispose of their waste responsibly.
