Canada has recently made the Decision to bring back 41 of its Diplomats from India Marking a Development in the Ongoing Diplomatic Dispute between the two Countries. This Decision was a Result of India’s Plan to Revoke Diplomatic immunity for the Majority of Canadian Diplomats and their Families except for 21 of them. This move forced Canada to withdraw the Remaining Diplomats and their families from India Prioritizing their Safety.

The Origins of this Diplomatic Feud can be traced back to a Tragic incident the Killing of a Sikh Separatist named Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian Soil. In the aftermath of this event Ottawa Publicly linked Indian intelligence agencies to Nijjar’s Murder near Vancouver which further Fueled the Tensions between the two Nations.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar was known for his advocacy of a Separate Sikh state referred to as Khalistan outside of India. Canada has called for India’s Cooperation in the investigation of this Murder which includes examining the alleged Role of Indian intelligence. However, India has Strongly Rejected these allegations and responded with Various Countermeasures.

Among the actions taken by India was the Suspension of visa Services for Canadian Citizens and the expulsion of an Indian diplomat from Canada. The diplomatic dispute has had Ripple effects Leading to a Significant strain in Bilateral Relations.

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar while attending an event in New York last Month, expressed India’s willingness to examine any Evidence Provided by Canada. However he also mentioned India’s efforts to share extensive information about Organized Crime networks operating from within Canada, particularly those with ties to Sikh Separatist Groups.

The Sikh Separatist issue is a Complex and Sensitive one due to its Historical context. Although the Sikh Separatist movement within India was largely Suppressed by Security forces in the 1980s, it Remains a Contentious topic especially within Canada, where a Portion of the Sikh community Supports the Creation of Khalistan. This has led to Protests outside Indian Diplomatic Missions in Canada where Indian Flags were burned and Pictures of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi were trampled upon.
