Toshakhana Case: Court Suspends Warrant Against Nawaz Sharif

In a recent development, an accountability court has suspended the permanent warrant against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Toshakhana case. The decision, which came as a result of a petition, has generated significant interest and discussion within the legal and political circles of Pakistan.

The suspension of the warrant is announced by Accountability Judge Mohammad Bashir, is temporary and will be in effect until October 24. The court has made it clear that the warrant will be restored if Nawaz Sharif fails to appear in court on the specified date. Also shows the significance of his presence in the ongoing Toshakhana reference case.

The notable aspect of this development is the non-opposition from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecutor during the court hearing. The prosecutor’s stance was that the court had the authority to suspend the permanent warrant, which was originally issued to bring the accused, Nawaz Sharif before the court.

Nawaz Sharif’s counsel, Qazi Misbah, argued for the warrant’s suspension, emphasizing his client’s intention to appear before the court on October 24. Misbah also noted that a medical treatment report had been submitted in the court which indicated that Nawaz Sharif’s absence was due to health issues. The defense counsel also pointed out that similar cases had seen warrants suspended in the past just like Ishaq Dar’s situation.
