Pakistan continues the higher trend of polio cases for their eradication, and as per the statement, they are expecting about three more polio cases in 2024 which would make the total number of polio cases in the year 59. The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) for Polio Eradication announced that all new polio cases are from Dera Ismail Khan, Kemari, Kashmore, and all children infected with Wild Polio type 1. As per the provincial distribution of the case, all the cases are reported from Baluchistan which is 26 of 43 followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 16 then Sindh 15, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
The situation with polio has deteriorated which contributed to the desire of the world community, and international organizations to demand emergency measures from Pakistan. The sources have indicated that some international organizations are concerned about the growing rate of the virus while some of them may visit Pakistan next month to support the prevention processes. By the persuasion of these organizations, the Pakistani government has reportedly informed them that the government is fully prepared and committed to adopting timely and effective measures to contain the spread of the virus.
Polio is still a very lethal disease, which forms the majority of its fatal impacts on children under the age of five. The virus is easily spread and direct contact through the fecal-oral route or contaminated water and food. Primary it can cause paralysis in one in 200 cases and when paralyzed breathing muscles can lead to death in 5 to 10 percent of patients. Prophylaxis is still the best cure and there are two types of vaccines – oral and inactivated – which when given afford lifelong immunity if the doses are repeated.
