(C)PTV,pakistan to face the worst climate crisis info minister addresses in press conference
Romina Khurshid Alam, the Coordinator to the Prime Minister in the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. On September 12, 2024, during the press conference regarding the “Recharge Pakistan Project,” Ms.Romina Khurshid addressed the rising climatic crisis in Pakistan.
Climatic Crisis – Causes and Consequences
Pakistan is a country with a landscape of mountains, deserts, and the irrigated Indus Valley. The country’s major GDP is contributed by agriculture, manufacturing, and services. All these major occupations depend on good landscapes with quality raw materials, water, transport, and labor. If the rising climatic crisis eliminates any of these essentials, it would completely collapse the whole nation. To protect the country and its environment the Pakistan government joined hands with GCF (Green Climate Fund – of the UN), who help countries globally with better adaptation and mitigation activities to climate change.
In the past five years, Pakistan dealt with many climate crises,
2018 – Severe heatwaves were experienced with temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius and led to the death of 60 citizens of the country.
2020 – The significant locust invasion caused devastating damage to the farmers. Cyclones and unseasonal rains are also some of the other crises.
2021 – The glacial melting resulted in the glacial lake outburst floods that took the lives and livelihood of thousands of people, particularly in the region of Gilgit-Balistan.
2022 – Another unpredicted rain led to the flood which killed over 1,700 lives, displacing millions of people from their homes, and caused a severe attack on the industries which was worth a million dollars.
