Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif announces stance on electricity theft and billing

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently chaired a meeting on the performance of electricity distribution companies, focusing on addressing major challenges such as electricity theft and ensuring transparency in billing practices.

The meeting focused on the performance of companies such as Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO). PM Sharif directed that the installation of smart meters be expedited for more accuracy.

The Prime Minister also emphasised that inappropriate billing is not going to be tolerated and that strict action is going to be taken against officials part of such practices. He also called for measures to tackle electricity theft and ensure efficient distribution.

Need for transparency and accuracy in billing practices

Electricity theft has been a major source of concern in Pakistan. But Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is looking for tough solutions for the issue, stressing the need for greater transparency and accuracy in billing practices.

PM Sharif also expressed concern about the inadequate pace of the appointment process for CEOs of the distribution companies and instructed that the process be completed promptly through a merit-based approach.

Shehbaz Sharif also noted the importance of merit in the recruitment process for staff at the companies, emphasising that no leniency is going to be tolerated. Numerous senior officials attended the recent meeting.
