ConnectHear: Pakistani startup building app to alert hearing-impaired people about natural disasters

Because of climate change, natural disasters such as floods and cyclones are likely becoming more frequent and intense. In such tough situations, different countries across the globe are looking for methods to establish systems to protect their populations.

The Japanese people are setting a benchmark in this case. Their J-Alert system generates high-pitched alarm alerts and displays messages on mobile phones. It has been ensuring timely communication during emergencies.

Inspired by such solutions, a Pakistani startup is building a disaster response system for hearing-impaired people across the country. This system is going to function as a mobile application, ensuring people have access to critical information during disasters.

ConnectHear building app to alert hearing-impaired people

More than 10 million people in Pakistan are hard of hearing. There is a need for inclusive communication tools during emergencies. The ConnectHear app is going to do just that. Its technology is designed to function in most places.

Natural disasters such as the 2022 Pakistan floods affected more than 30 million people, triggering urgent displacements. The floods disrupted communication channels, preventing critical information from reaching those needing it the most.

ConnectHear aims to connect its users and sign language interpreters so that key messages can be shared. Another system is going to be used by humanitarian organisations to generate sign language videos for early alert messages.
