China and Pakistan, have made known that they are going to improve their already good relations by taking their cooperation to a new level under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and this marks a promising chapter in the history of their friendship. The disclosure was part of the official talks that took place in China during the diplomatic mission by the Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch, who both stressed that both countries are ʺironclad friends and all-weather strategic cooperative partnersʺ.
The enhanced CPEC 2.0 project will concentrate mainly on the development of the industrial sectors, Special Economic Zones (SEZs), renewable energy sources such as clean energy, and agriculture projects. This new development is coming at a very strategic time because Pakistan is tackling economic problems, including the recent mass demonstrations in the Gilgit-Baltistan region where people protested against power outages during the cold season.
The protests on the Karakoram Highway reminded everyone about the tough times that the growing politico-economic union faces including the poor road network that becomes worse during the winters.
The further commitment to CPEC, which was first inked in 2015 as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, is positioned as a strategic measure to help Pakistan revitalize its ailing economy with Chinese financial support.
