World Bank Approves $240 Million to Improve Karachi's Water and Sanitation Services

The World Bank has raised $240 million in financing for the Second Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP-2) to improve the water and Sanitation sector facilities in Pakistan’s largest city. 

Through the project, safely managed water supply will be reached by 15,834,155 people and sanitation to 7,520,000 residents by the year 2030, including Kibera’s informal settlers and other sensitive groups.

Addressing the occasion, Najy Benhassine, World Bank Country Director for Pakistan said that safe water sanitation and hygiene commonly abbreviated as WASH is the fundamental concern of public health. The initiative will also enhance spending for water treatment, distribution networks, and sewerage renewal; where 50% of the targeted beneficiaries are females, and 58% are the youths. 

It is one of the incremental steps of a regional intervention planned for 100 million people in South Asia that will be carried out in partnership with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
