sindh urges increase in cotton support price

The Sindh government is asking the federal government for a favor to raise the price it pays for cotton. This request comes because cotton is a big business in Pakistan. It’s not just any simple crop. It’s one of the biggest things we grow in our country and it affects many parts of our Economy.

Muhammad Bux Mahar, the Agriculture Minister in Sindh, says that the current price the government pays for cotton isn’t enough to help the farmers. He suggests increasing it to Rs10 to 11,000 for every 40 kilograms of cotton.  With this increase, he believes, would encourage more Farmers to grow Cotton.

Right now, only about 20% of the cotton that needs picking is getting picked in Sindh. This is because the farmers aren’t happy with the price they’re getting for their hard work. Mahar warns that if things don’t improve, not only cotton but other crops like rice could also suffer. He’s worried about water too, saying Sindh needs its fair share during the Khareef season.

One big reason for all this concern is the way water is shared out. Muhammad Bux Mahar doesn’t like the current system, which he calls the “three-dimension formula.” He thinks it’s unfair to Sindh.
