imran khan faces questioning over may 9 incidents ongoing investigations unfold
Imran Khan, the leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is currently in Attock jail in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A special Joint Investigation Team (JIT), authorized by an anti-terrorism court (ATC), is questioning him about the events that happened on May 9 across the country. This questioning is allowed in connection with several cases, and the court has approved further interrogations by the police.
The JIT is made up of five high-ranking members and had recently visited Attock Jail to question Imran Khan. He is serving a three-year sentence due to his involvement in the Toshakhana case. The JIT is investigating him for various cases under charges like sedition and anti-terrorism laws.
Among the charges are serious offenses like attempting to wage war against Pakistan, abetting mutiny, and rioting. These allegations were initially mentioned in the first information report (FIR), and Imran Khan has been questioned about them.
Additional charges, including sections like 120, 120-A, 120-B, 121-A, 505, 153, 153-A, 153-B, and 107 of the Pakistan Penal Code, have been brought up during the investigation. These charges relate to attacks on Askari Tower, Shadman police station, and the burning of offices belonging to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Lahore’s Model Town, as well as the Jinnah House.
The investigations stem from the events of May 9, when protests and violence erupted across the country following Imran Khan’s arrest in a £190 million settlement case. Many PTI workers and leaders were arrested for their involvement in the violence and attacks on various sites, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
The police added charges related to these events on August 18 and then sought permission from the anti-terrorism court to investigate Imran Khan further. The court granted this request, allowing the investigations to continue.
