Following the Ministry of IT on Wednesday notified the FIA, its Cybercrime Wing is now officially authorized to take action against social media crimes. This decision has also altered Pakistan’s direction on regulating and managing content on the internet as it places all the roles and responsibilities under its wings that were entrusted to the NAA by this wing of the FIA established in 2023 as the National Cybercrimes and Investigation Agency.
The Government of Pakistan is going to add new laws to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) to control fake news and panic in Social Media. Under the new rules, content directed at national institutions, content that spreads fear, and content that generates hatred for the state and its institutions might be deleted.
There is also a draft proposal to create a DRPA – Digital Rights Protection Authority – that would be capable of blocking or deleting certain sorts of social media posts, with possible criminal penalties including imprisonment and fines.
