Iqra University Faces Public Criticism Over Bold Fashion Show
Iqra University, one of the best educational institutions in the federal capital is in the dock for intense criticism after its recent “Iqra University fashion odyssey 2024.” The event which was organized in collaboration with Asian Institute of Fashion Design (AIFD) featured young designers showing off young vibrant talents of bold and contemporary suits on the runway. Despite such an extensive talent combined with creative levels of expression, the parade has sparked a wave of criticism on social media regarding its clothes and theme.
A viral video was taken of models wearing daring Western inspired outfits which most described as inappropriate for an institution called “Iqra” which the word is related to Islamic and cultural values as the first revelation in the Quran.
According to critics that show misrepresents the institution’s cultural and moral identity accusing the institution of promoting the ways of the West under the guise of creativity. Some social media users expressed disappointment saying that the fashion was just not in line with the values they believe should inform youth and education.
Supporters of the show complemented the designers for their creative expression and innovation. Critics, on the other hand suggested that it was not particularly unique as all the design elements were quite westernized without much infusion of local heritage or cultural inputs.
This underlines a very debated issue in Pakistan about modernity vis-à-vis tradition questioning to what extent fashion can or must adapt these global influences within the framework of the local culture.
It has ignited a wider debate on what role universities should play in promoting creative freedom without desecrating cultural values. As Iqra University addresses these controversies, there are questions of how the university will address those concerns raised by critics against it and the demand for cultural inclusiveness on creative platforms.
