The recently concluded anti-polio drive in Punjab has been a success story, as over 16.3 million children below five years of age took the vaccination in four days. The extensive drive which had provincial coordinator Adeel Tasawar also recorded high coverage in cities with Lahore alone accounting for 1,193,539, Faisalabad 867, 015 and Multan 751,015 children given the vaccine against the virus.
In the launching ceremony of the campaign, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted around 60 fresh polio cases but trusted the federal and provincial governments to tackle this problem. He also thanked the Gates Melinda Foundation, WHO and Saudi Arabia for their support in the fight against polio in Pakistan.
The campaign implemented in 33 districts had a final day for immunisation catch-up. These agencies stress the need for the parents to ensure their children receive the complete doses as poliomyelitis is still a deadly disease which through person to person transmission can cause paralysis.
