The United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) consul general in Karachi this week visited several stalls showcasing Arabic cuisine and culture at a three-day festival in the southern port city of Karachi in the run-up to the Gulf nation’s national day.

Minister for Culture of Sindh Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah inaugurated the three-day Sindh Handicrafts Festival, featuring traditional shawls, quilts, looms and caps made by artists from across Sindh, at Karachi’s famous Port Grand entertainment centre on Friday.

UAE Consul General Dr Bakheet Ateeq Al Rumaithi visited the festival on Friday to showcase Arab cuisine and review stalls promoting Arab culture. UAE Consulate is preparing to celebrate the country’s 53rd National Day on December 2.

According to Al Rumaithi, women, children and the elderly were all taking part in the three-day cultural festival.

According to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United Arab Emirates is one of Pakistan’s main trading partners and a major source of foreign investment, valued at more than $10 billion over the past 20 years. The trade volume between the UAE and Pakistan has reached $7.9 billion in 2023, an increase of 12% compared to 2022.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in May this year that the UAE was committed to investing $10 billion in promising economic sectors in Pakistan. In September, the Pakistan Business Council (PBC), set up at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also aims to increase the volume of bilateral trade between Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates to $40 billion in three years.

The Emirates are also home to more than a million Pakistani expatriates and are the second largest source of remittances to Pakistan, after Saudi Arabia.
